Wilcom was founded by Dr. Toshiaki Kawasaki in 1983 as a system integration subsidiary of Kato World Corporation which was established in 1948 by Katsusuke Kato, inventor of the first industrial knitting machine in Japan. Kawasaki and his colleagues saw the need to develop a software system that could be used to design and control knitting machines. The initial focus of the company was to develop software for knitting machines; this was followed by development of knitwear design and patternmaking software. In 1989, Wilcom was spun off from Kato World Corporation to form an independent business entity. Kawasaki, who is an engineer by training, continues as President and Chief Executive Officer of Wilcom Ltd. Since its inception, Wilcom has continued to serve as a leading provider of CAD/CAM and textile technology solutions for knitted textiles, apparel and interior components worldwide. Wilcom's new headquarters was built in 1993. The new building consists of two separate buildings: the first housed Kawasaki's office and the second, his private residence. There is a connecting bridge between the two buildings so that both Kawasaki and his family can move freely between the day and evening operations of Wilcom Ltd.
